Playa del Carmen tends to be more popular with families. With smaller resorts, lots of activities, and a downtown that is walkable and safe, Playa del Carmen is an ideal vacation spot for families.

Cancun does have some great spots for families. But with the party atmosphere, in Cancun, you’ll find that kids are not allowed in some restaurants after a certain time. However, there are a number of hotels that have great amenities for families and children in Cancun.
Which Has Better Nightlife?
This is a tough one. Both Cancun and Playa del Carmen are known for their nightlife. The one that is better really depends on what you are looking for. Cancun has a more ritzy nightlife with large dinner-club spots and high energy dance clubs.
Playa del Carmen offers plenty of nightlife options, including a closing time of 3:00 AM for most bars and clubs. There are the spots that cater to the “spring break” crowd, but many of the bars and clubs are quieter and offer great cocktails, dancing and local music.
Which Is Cheaper?
Playa del Carmen is generally considered the more affordable of the two locations. Sure, you’ll have to pay a bit more for ground transportation, but once you get into Playa del Carmen you’ll find that lodging is more varied and affordable, and food is also less expensive.

There is no shortage of great food in either Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Resorts in Cancun offer great dining. In downtown Cancun you’ll find more upscale options than you will in Playa del Carmen.
However, what Cancun is missing that Playa del Carmen has is the more authentic local restaurants.
In Playa del Carmen you’ll find some of the typical Mexican chain restaurants, but it excels in the variety of locally owned restaurants that serve everything from traditional Mexican fare to sushi, steak, and a variety of European cuisine.
Which Is Easier to Get To?
This is a pretty simple answer. Sure, you fly into the same airport for both destinations, but Cancun and the Hotel Zone are less than 30 minutes from the airport. Playa del Carmen is 45 miles from the airport, so you’ll have to rent a car or use a shuttle to get to your resort.
It’s not a difficult ride, but if you get off the plane and just want to get to the beach, your wait will be longer if you’re heading to Playa del Carmen.
Which Is Easier to Get Around Town?
Playa del Carmen is one of the most accessible resort areas in Mexico. Many of the resorts are just a short taxi ride from downtown. Once you get to downtown Playa del Carmen, you’ll find that it is easy to walk or bike around town.
Most of the bars, restaurants and shopping are located over just a few streets that are centrally located.
