Jamaica

From fried plantain to jerk chicken to some of the most flavorful curries you’ll ever eat, Jamaican food is legendary and probably has some of the best food in the whole of the Caribbean. Food plays such a huge role in Jamaican culture and it’s apparent when you walk around the streets and see so many amazing restaurants, cafes, and street food stalls!

Dominican Republic

While much less famous than Jamaican cuisine, Dominican Republic cuisine has its roots in Spanish and Indigenous Taino food. You’ll find a lot of fried fish dishes, tostones, eggs, and more. It’s definitely a delicious cuisine, but the restaurant scene isn’t huge in the Dominican Republic, especially with there being so many all-inclusive resorts.

Dominican Republic

Like many tourist hotspots, the Dominican Republic does have an issue with petty crime and pickpocketing, but as long as you’re alert, aren’t super flashy with your valuables, and use your common sense, you should be fine. By and large, the Dominican Republic is a safe place to visit for tourists, especially around the resort areas.

4 Questions to Help You Decided to Travel to Jamaica vs Dominican Republic

Tourists-Walking-On-Streets-In-Santo-Domingo

Want some final bits of advice to help you decide between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with these four key questions that you’re going to want to ask yourself before making any big destination decisions!

When is your Caribbean trip?

While the peak and rainy seasons between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are pretty much the same, the rainy season in the Dominican Republic does start a little bit earlier. So, if you’re looking to get a shoulder season deal to Jamaica, you can book your trip in May, after the high season, but before the rainy season hits.

With the Dominican Republic, there isn’t really a buffer between the high and rainy seasons, so while you might be able to get a deal towards the start or end of the rainy season, it’s not really going to be the vibe for a beach vacation.

On the flip side, with so many inland excursions, the rainy season in Jamaica can be a cool time to visit. Of course, avoid the hurricane season, but the rains make the Blue Mountains look lush and verdant, the coffee crop is coming to life, and the waterfalls are in full flow! All that and the resorts, accommodations, and flights are likely to be a lot cheaper.

Which flights are easier and cheaper?

By and large, there are more flights into the Dominican Republic than into Jamaica, but it’s not by a lot. For instance, there are 42 flights per week from New York JFK into Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, but only 32 per week to Montego Bay in Jamaica.

If you’re coming from Central or South America, you’re going to find a lot more routes into the Dominican Republic due to the Spanish connection, whereas there are many more routes from the UK and other European nations into Jamaica. From North America, it’s pretty cheap and easy to get to either island location as they’re both popular routes. Interestingly enough, Toronto has the most routes out of Punta Cana each week with a massive 59 flights each week going to the snowy north!

When it comes to price, there’s hardly any difference. For example, during November, which is the end of the rainy season for both countries, round-trip flights from JFK cost an average of $408 into Santo Domingo and $443 into Montego Bay. On the long-haul side, you’re looking at average prices of £514 return from London to Santo Domingo and £522 to Montego Bay, so the difference is nominal.

Of course, there are always deals to be found with some airline deals from London to Montego Bay going for as low as £300 and one-way tickets from New York to Santo Domingo at around $80. A lot of the time, it’s cheaper to get your flights included as a package deal with your accommodation, especially if you’re staying at a resort.

What’s the vibe of your trip?

If the point of your Caribbean vacation is to sit on a beach for a week, chill out, and drink bottomless Pina Coladas, then honestly, the Dominican Republic is going to be the perfect vibe for you. You can absolutely zone out, work on your tan, take a dip in the crystal clear waters, and snorkel until your heart’s content.

On the other hand, if you want a vacation that’s a mix of beach relaxation and more adventurous excursions, look no further than Jamaica, You can explore the mountains, enjoy a chill day at the beach, hit up a museum or two, grab a great bite to eat at a local restaurant and chase a waterfall or two. Jamaica can offer a much more varied trip without making it a logistical nightmare, as it’s a smaller island that’s jam-packed with natural beauty!

Who are you traveling with?

While you can easily have a great girls’ trip or romantic getaway in either Jamaica or the Dominican Republic, many families opt for the Dominican Republic due to all the all-inclusive, family-friendly resorts with their own watersports on-site.

Honestly, I think families can also have a great time in Jamaica, especially if you’re an outdoorsy family, but if you want a comfortable, fun, and watersport-filled family getaway then the Dominican Republic is going to be more your speed.

Jamaica vs Dominican Republic: Which Is The Better Choice?

Ocho-Rios-Jamaica

So, all in all, if you want a vacation where you can chill out on the beach and recharge your batteries at a gorgeous resort, you need to book your flights to the Dominican Republic. On the flip side, if you want the best of both worlds and have a bit of relaxation, adventure, and culture on your next Caribbean vacation, you’re going to want to check out Jamaica.

While both islands have great nightlife, beautiful beaches, and plenty of things for families to enjoy, I have to give Jamaica the edge just for offering a bit more variety. It means that if you’re kind of sick of the resort or sitting on the beach, you can easily book a tour into the Blue Mountains or see where Bob Marley created music history. While there are picturesque towns and attractions around the Dominican Republic, they’re much less popular and the tourist trade is pretty much entirely geared toward the beach resorts and waterparks.

It all comes down to what you want to do on your Caribbean vacation. Both Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are amazing destinations, but they’re very different and offer completely different vacations. With so many daily flight routes to both islands, it’s all about who you’re traveling with and what the vibe of your vacation is going to be!
